Chapter Nine

Alaina

This stupid rope still tied me to the pole. No matter what I did, I couldn’t get free. Every time I tried to untie it, it knotted tighter. I pulled and picked at it, but nothing seemed to help. It was as though the rope was possessed and had all intention of forcing me to be a Vakarran captive whether I liked it or not.

For fuck’s sake. I just wanted my freedom.

The sound of a shoe scraping against concrete echoed around me. I stilled completely. I tried to hear, but the men were talking so loudly in the ship and it was hard to focus on any one thing. I bit my lip. They sounded angry about something.

My heart pounded in my chest.

I’d heard rumors of other humans living in Atlanta, but most of the intel didn’t point in a positive direction. A renegade group of men lived out there, gathering weapons and tools to fight the Vakarrans. One woman had been captured by them once and had escaped to our camp. She wouldn’t comment on her experience, but every time the topic came up, this haunted look would pass over her face and she’d rush off and head to bed.

Maybe the rumors were true. Maybe this was dangerous territory. Or maybe it wasn’t, and we were the only ones here right now.

My eyes darted around, looking, searching, analyzing every shadow.

Another sound echoed, before someone touched my arm. I jerked, turning around as quickly as I could.

I gasped upon seeing a woman.

She was young, maybe twenty-two, long dark hair, green eyes, wearing jeans and a black leather jacket that looked like it had seen better days, but most important, she looked healthy. She looked like a survivor. She looked like me.

I swallowed heavily. She wasn’t what I expected at all.

Even her expression was kind, although filled with pity. She felt sad for me. To be honest, I felt kind of sad for me too.

Her green eyes studied mine. Hers were flecked with little slivers of blue. She smiled.

“Hi,” I whispered.

“Hey there,” she responded quietly, watching around us and positioning herself behind a few things that would block the Vakarrans’ view should they come out of the ship.

“They’re all inside the ship, right?” she asked.

I nodded.

“Good. My name is Nina. I take it you’re not exactly a willing captive here,” she said softly, and I shook my head.

“No. I’m not,” I answered.

“I want to help you,” she began.

She handed me a piece of paper.

“Here. Hide this and make sure they don’t find it. There’s a group of us, men and women together surviving in the city. There haven’t been any Vakarrans that ventured here until the group that took you, so it’s taken us a little off guard, but we’ve been planning for something like this to happen sooner or later. We’d like for you to join us. You’ll be safe. My friends stole some parts out of the ship and that should delay your abduction into space, so it’ll give you some time to get away and escape.
